so I have this old laptop, p4-3.2ghz w/ a 17" screen that I have installed Windows 7 on. It runs fine and I was wondering if spending the money to get an ssd ide is worth it?

I know I can purchase a new laptop, but a 17" media center laptop would really cost alot, which is what this is.

I currently slapped a 40gb ide-33 drive in it since my original hard drive died, so it's still a usable laptop, it just gets warm on the keyboard right above the hard drive. I'm guessing a ssd would help the speed and also any heat issues that I have.

Myktek- you should see a nice performance boost, but personally I haven't seen any IDE SSDs that support TRIM (which is a feature, under Windows 7, that helps prevents SSD from slowing down as they age). You could get a PCI SATA card that supports bootable drives and then slap the SSD on there. The Sandforce SSDs such as the OCZ Vertex 2 and Agility 2 right now are the way to go in terms of performance and price. I actually recently bought an 80GB GSkill Falcon Pro SSD for $130 which also uses the Sandforce 1200 chipset.
