i want to get a speedy-fast ssd for my new i7 laptop i just dont know where to start. ive done a little research but if someone could point me in the right direction i'd appreciate it.
as of now, i dont think storage size is an issue since ill have 2 hdd bays and i could run everything from my 500gb hdd (unless that slows things down to use the ssd to access files from the hdd)
im willing to shell out cash for the fastest ssd out there as long as theres a significant increase in speed for the better one
thanks for the help |

| It's hard to beat the OCZ Vertex 2- you average like 225 MB/sec on both reads and writes. If you have the $ go for the 120 gig version which will run you about $275ish. However you might want to wait for the Vertex 2 Pro to come out which promises to be even faster with the new Sandforce SF-1500 controller. |

like i said i dont care about gig as long as i have 2 hdd bays. the way i understand it, if you have an ssd as your OS, even if your storage is on a hdd, the speed goes by the ssd even when moving files from the hdd to the ssd. so i'll get even a 40gb ssd as long as i have the 500gb hdd to go along with it.
when is the vertex2pro supposed to come out? |

Personally I no longer really like regular hard drives on laptops because there's just too much danger of the drive being damaged by excess movement, which is sometimes hard to avoid with a laptop. With an SSD you have the luxury of not only speed but being able to not worry as you move the notebook while it is on. You can also click on shutdown and then just put the laptop away vs having to wait until the the power shuts completely off. So if I were you I'd go with an SSD only solution for the laptop. On my desktop, however, you still can't beat hard drives in terms of value and capacity.
The Vertex 2 Pro was announced last month and might be out any day, but yeah if you really need to get one now you can't go wrong with the Vertex 2. |

i'm getting a 3 year warranty on my laptop so i dont have to worry about the hdd breaking. though i doubt it will, as i've ruggedly used several laptops iin the past with no damage to my hdd
how is the vertex 2 in comparison to the phoenix pro and the top intel ssd? |

^^I guess I haven't been as lucky. Replacing the hard drive is no big deal, it's the inconvenience and waste of time and possible data loss that are the main issues if your hard drive craps out.
I haven't heard of the Phoenix Pro. The Vertex 2 as far as I know is the champ right now, even over the Intel X25M Gen 2. |

| About 9 months ago I purchased an Intel 160G2. It has performed solid with no issues. About a month a go I purchased an OCZ Vertex 2E; it has more disk space. Both drives work great. I run them in a dell M6500 with an I7 x920 processor with 8GB 1333Mhz memory and Windows Server 2008R2 with HyperV in it. People use my virtual machines, web server and sql server, while I do development work and I do not even notice it. It has been the best upgrade that I have done the last 22 years. I do not think that I will buy another mechanical drive. It sounds and they are obsolete; they should really stop making them... |

| Nick- I think you're right about how big a difference performance wise a SSD can improve your system. I still use hard drives, however, because you can't beat them on price per gigabyte. Hard drives are ideal places for me to place media files and backup files. |
