I would like an SSD for booting Win7 and for games such as the new Elder Scrolls which is not yet out. I will have SATA 6Gb. I can only afford to spend just under £100 GBP.

A few months ago, I remember reading the Corsair Force was the best choice from the 40GB drives, but I did not buy at that time. Looking at recent system builds on AnandTech and SharkyExtreme, I saw OCZ Vertex 2 60GB and Crucial RealSSD 60GB selected in the builds.

Here are the prices I have found:
    55.95 OCZ Vertex 60GB
    64.99 OCZ Vertex 2 50GB
    74.78 OCZ Vertex 2 60GB
    76.48 Crucial RealSSD M4 60GB
    77.72 OCZ Agility 3 60GB
    77.99 Crucial RealSSD M4 60GB
    79.92 Corsair Force Series 3 60GB

    1. What is difference between between RealSSD M4 and RealSSD C300?

    2. What is difference between Vertex 2 and the following: Vertex Turbo, Vertex 2e, Agility 3?

    3. Should I sacrifice size to get a newer generation drive, or go for the biggest drive I can afford and have more games running at SSD speed? Is it mainly the write speeds which are better with the newer drives - surely for games it is the read speeds which matter most? Is reliability more of an issue with older generations?

    4. My dad has Intel X-25M 80GB and may be willing to sell for a similar price - should I go for it?

Well since you intend to install games on the drive I would not sacrifice space for speed. All those SSDs you listed will give you a BIG noticeable performance boost in terms of Windows boot time and game load times. But amongst those drives you listed themselves you're not going to see more than two to 3 seconds difference in loading Windows or a big game. I highly recommend that you get at least a 80GB because again you're looking to install games on it. I would NOT go for a used SSD though- as you know SSDs have a lifespan that decreases with writes. I recommend that you look into perhaps the Kingston SSD NOW 90 GB which should fit your budget. Or if you could find any of the above between 80GB or 120GB for your budget- might be possible. The SATA3 bandwidth might be worth it if you can score the drive for 10% more or less than the previous gen.

this seems like a good suggestion. 50% extra space and the cost is 82.99. however, i already have 115GB of games installed, so whatever size i get i will have to compromise! Wink
it's not so much the game load times as the loading during a level causing stuttering that i am trying to overcome.

i looked at storagereview dot com slash kingston_ssdnow_v100_review_96gb
average latency of 2.59ms on the gaming test compares well with 9ms as advertised for a standard 7200rpm drive, but maximum latency of 626ms on one test is worrying!

i really appreciate the suggestion, but supposing i was to go for speed only (within my budget), then which one would you choose?

    cheers

was sorely tempted by SSDnow but worried about stutters. went for the OCZ Solid3 in the end, as it seems to be cheaper and faster than the Vertex2!

^^Great choice! Let us know how much faster Windows and your games boot up! I don't have games on my SSD since they take up too much space, but my Windows 7 in on an 80GB GSkill Phoenix (it's like a Vertex 2) and it boots in about 30-35 seconds.
