Post subject: Confused between SSD and 7200 rpm?!  PostPosted: Jun 24, 2011 - 08:59 PST

    Dear Friends,

I have an Acer Aspire 5940G laptop, 2 GHz, 2G ram and a pathetic 4200 rpm hdd. Now I would like to upgrade my hard disk for speed. But I am not sure whether SSD or a 7200 rpm drive would be the best bet for me.

First of all, I am not sure whether this old lappy support SSD hard disk; even if it supports would it really give such performance as it boasts? Also, I may install only Windows 2K or XP (not Windows 7 as my webcam works really pathetic in Windows 7). But I heard, SSD drives works best with Windows 7 only (kindly ignore linux and other os variants).

Considering the above facts, kindly suggest me whether to go for SSD or a 7,200 rpm drive as the best upgrade for this laptop? Thanks a million in advance.

    Warm Regards
    Anand Uthaman

Hi Anand- the 5940G seems to be a relatively new model by Acer- are you sure you have the model name correct? If your laptop uses SATA then you do have a lot more options available to you when it comes to SSDs. It also depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much space you need. In general I do recommend SSDs for all laptops because of not only speed but the shock tolerance vs mechanical traditional hard drives.

An SSD also increases your battery life as well as makes everything run much faster. Your laptop has a 2.5inch drive inside it and it uses the Intel PM55 chipset which is SATA III - so the new SSD's from Crucial, Intel and Solidata's X8 series (soon to be released) will blow your mind with performance of over 500 Mb/s read and write.
