Cavalry is known for making computer drive enclosures and NAS enclosures. They have also started to make SSDs as well. The Cavalry CASD00032MIS is the 32 GB version of their Pelican series of SSDs. The Pelican series designate their MLC SSDs, while the Eagle series are the company's SLC SSD offerings. SLC SSDs have a longer lifespan and offer faster write speeds. There are three capacities in the Pelican series- 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB. The Cavalry Eagle SSDs come in either 32 GB or 64 GB. Currently you can buy the CASD00032MIS for as low as $85, which is a good deal for an entry-level 32 GB MLC SSD.
Housed in a sturdy metal casing, the CASD00032MIS uses SATA II interface, and as a bonus comes included with a USB 2.0 interface as well.
Benchmarks
Testing Environment:
-------------------------------------
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM: 8 GB DDR2
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit
Benchmark Software Used
-------------------------------------
•Crystal Disk Mark 2.2
•Sisoft Sandra 2009 SP3
•PMBT v. 0.2 (100000 queries, average of second & third runs) using Apache 2.2.11 (Win32), PHP 5.2.8, and MySQL 5.0.41-community-nt.
Comparison Drives:
-------------------------------------
Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5 TB
WDC WD10EACS-00ZJB0 1 TB
Transcend TS64GSSD25S-S 64GB SSD
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB

On the Crystal Disk Mark sequential read test, the Cavalry SSD manages an impressive 119.7 MB/s, trailing only the Seagate 1.5 TB drive.

It's a different story, however, on the sequential write test, as the Pelican comes up in last place, pretty much with the same score as the Transcend TS64GSSD25S-S 64GB SSD.

In the 512K Read test, the Cavalry emerges as the leader of the pack, tallying a score of 113.4 MB/s, which is over 25% faster than the second place Transcend SSD.

When it came to the 512K Write test, the CASD00032MIS falters to last place at less than 40 MB/s.

The Cavalry SSD excels in the 4K read test and almost doubles the speed of the Transcend, while beating traditional hard drives by more than 7X.

The Pelican comes up second in the 4K write test which was a bit of a pleasant surprise.

The Sisoft Sandra drive index tests for drive read speed, so it wasn't surprising to see the Cavalry lead the pack with a score of 115 MB/s.

The Cavalry and the Transcend SSDs trump all traditional hard drives in random access time, measuring in at 0.25 and 0.18 ms, respectively.

The CASD00032MIS fared well in the PMBT MySQL benchmark tests, especially in the UPDATE test where it came in at an impressive 43,446 SQL queries per second.
Conclusion
The Cavalry Pelican is not the fastest SSD out there nor does it claim to be. It is a solid choice if you're looking to replace your laptop HDD with a more reliable and faster storage solution. Its 32 GB capacity, however, makes it difficult to install Windows Vista on there. Windows XP and a Linux OS such as Ubuntu will, however, fit comfortably on the SSD.
Pros:
•Relatively low price for SSD
•No noise and low heat dissipation and power usage (= Good choice for Windows XP or Linux-based PC/Notebook)
•Fast read speed
•Sturdy metal casing
Cons:
•Capacity limits OS install choices
•Write speed is unimpressive
•Warranty is only 1 year
