Fusion-io ioMemory PCI-e SSDs upto 1.28 TB with 285,000 IOPS Unveiled

Fusion-io today launched its new ioMemory module. With support for the latest generation of MLC NAND Flash, 3X-nanometer (nm), Fusion-io is able to double the capacity of its family of products and achieve up to 1.28 terabytes (TB) of capacity from a single PCI Express card.

"We are at an inflection point in the industry where MLC technology has moved from consumer-grade products to datacenter systems, creating a much needed shift in the enterprise flash market to thinner, smaller, high capacity solutions with more than ample storage," said Joseph Unsworth, Research Director at Gartner.

Fusion's next-generation ioMemory module doubles the capacity of the company's PCI Express-based solutions. When used in concert with Fusion's newly released ioMemory Virtual Storage Layer (ioMemory VSL), the ioMemory technology delivers significant performance enhancements to achieve nearly 300,000 sustained IOPS and more efficient CPU utilization-to-work output than any other solution on the market.

Rather than impersonating a hard drive, Fusion's new ioMemory module offers an extension of the memory hierarchy for servers. Along with providing tighter integration with host systems and applications, the new ioMemory module also includes the following:

• Up to 1.28TB of capacity on a single PCI Express card

• Improved performance up to 285,000 sustained IOPS with under 25 microseconds commit latency

• Guarantees data integrity in the event of power loss

• No failure-prone batteries or super-capacitors needed to protect in-flight data

• Fusion's self-healing Flashback protection that offers Fusion's proprietary, RAID-like chip-level redundancy

• Sustained performance and endurance, even for applications that store compressed data

• Existing ioMemory deployments are field upgradable

Seagate and Samsung to Team up on SSD Controllers

Seagate and Samsung today announced that they have entered into a joint development and licensing agreement.

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop and cross-license related controller technologies for solid state drive ("SSD") storage devices to attain the high levels of performance, reliability and endurance demanded by enterprise storage applications.

The joint development effort builds on the existing SSD capabilities of each company while combining Seagate's leadership in enterprise storage technology with Samsung's flash memory technology specific to 30 nanometer-class MLC NAND. The jointly developed controller will be utilized in Seagate's enterprise-class SSDs.

"Seagate has long recognized that solid state technology has an important role to play in the comprehensive solutions the storage industry will deliver today and in the future, particularly in the enterprise market," said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. "Today's agreement with Samsung will help us bring a compelling set of SSD innovations to the enterprise storage market, with benefits that range from enhanced performance, endurance and reliability to cost and capacity improvements. Overall, this agreement with Samsung strengthens our SSD solutions strategy, and positions Seagate well as global demand for storage continues on its strong growth path."

Micron RealSSD P300 SSD Unveiled

Micron Technology has launched the Micron RealSSD P300 solid-state drive (SSD), bringing faster system performance and improved data integrity to enterprise environments. The RealSSD P300 drive features the SATA 6-gigabits per second (Gbps) interface, a first for the enterprise SSD market. The new P300 SSD delivers extraordinarily high steady-state input/output operations per second (IOPS), up to 44,000 reads and 16,000 writes--more than 15 times the write performance of competing SATA-based SSDs.

"The RealSSD P300 SSD is the fastest SATA-based drive on the market," 1 said Dean Klein, Micron vice president of Memory System Development. "The RealSSD P300 is able to do the work of multiple hard drives--outperforming a RAID of 12 hard drives in some cases." 2

The ever-expanding workload of today's enterprise environments requires the technology within to be able to withstand the rigors of data being constantly accessed, transferred and stored. The RealSSD P300 drive was designed specifically to address these requirements by using Micron's high-performance and high-endurance ONFI 2.1 34-nanometer (nm) single-level cell (SLC) NAND technology, ensuring product longevity and added reliability in today's demanding enterprise environments. Combining Micron's high-quality NAND and proprietary firmware design enables the P300 SSD to deliver the highest SATA drive endurance capability in the industry--3.5 petabytes total bytes written for the 200GB drive which is equal to writing approximately 1.9 terabytes per day, every day for five years. 3

"Aside from its raw performance, the RealSSD P300 product was also designed to reach industry leading steady-state capabilities, even with the write cache disabled. With the P300, users no longer have to choose between IOPs or throughput and maximum data resiliency--they can have both in the same drive," added Klein.

Micron worked with Calypso Systems, Inc., a leading industry benchmarking firm to test the P300 SSD. "The RealSSD P300 SSD once again shows Micron seizing an industry leading position, delivering tremendous performance gains relative to the competition," said Eden Kim, chief executive officer of Calypso Systems. "By taking advantage of the SATA 6Gb/s, the P300 showed impressive small block 4K Random Write IOPs that were as much as 2.5 to 16 times faster than competing drives it was tested against."

Available in 50, 100 and 200-gigabyte (GB) capacities, the RealSSD P300 drive is targeted primarily at enterprise applications including blade and conventional servers, storage arrays and high-end workstations. Designed to fit the standard 2.5-inch form factor, the P300 SSD achieves a read throughput speed of up to 360MB/s and a write throughput speed of up to 275MB/s.
